Good things seem to come in bunches. First,
you didnt hear about the .284 Winchester for a long time, now it seems everyone
wants a rifle chambered for it. Next, Winchester actions seemed to have been lost in the
shuffle for a short period, now they are much in vogue with all the short magnums
appearing from Remington and Winchester.
|

The rifle we have for this column is
a combination of the fine .284 Winchester and a Winchester action all set up in a
lightweight rifle by Rich Reiley of High Tech Rifles and Jim Bisio of Heritage Walnut.
The project between the two men started with a
Winchester CRF action that was detailed by Dave Cobb of Conifer, Colorado. He started by
altering the action to feed the .284 Winchester when set up at 3.100 inches with a bullet,
then it was fitted with a No. 1 Lilja stainless barrel. The bottom metal is by Blackburn
with S & K stainless rings and bases added to secure the Swarovski 3-9x36mm Habicht
scope.

The bolt knob is handsomely
checkered by Charity Littleton, and the exhibition grade English walnut blank came from
the inventory of Heritage Walnut of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jim Bisio, the owner of
Heritage, actually designed then duplicated the stock and finished it with a hard oil
finish. Finally, Kathy Forster of Portland, Oregon, added the special point pattern
checkering to the completed rifle. In short, the desire for a rifle that looks like its
running 200 miles per hour just standing still was now a dream come true.
Reiley told me, We usually
handle custom desires from traditional blued metal, wooden stocked rifles to all-weather
stainless steel synthetic models. This particular project is an example when some
imagination and top-quality products are brought together. Both men have worked on
other noteworthy projects such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundations 15th
anniversary and 2000 Safari Club rifles.
